Identity wound when the job is gone
We presently live in the energy corridor of Texas and it has become abundantly clear that many families are going through a tough and frustrating time in their lives. Both blue collar and white collar workers are being laid off by the thousands. That experience is one of the most poignant times in our lives. The identity these wage earners have had with themselves as an engineer, an administrator, project manager, financial officer, custodian, etc. etc. is suddenly lost. Many people become depressed and hide from reality. The reality is simply that if you don't have a job it is time to go find one… Admit you are out of work. You need to accept your condition before you can change it and go forward.
Nest security also restricts mission
Prior to flying free there is a tie to the nest that restricts the bird to its immediate surroundings. The nest holds some security but it also restricts the eagle’s ability to search for food, drink from a clear stream, or glide on a stream of air that can carry it to new adventures and even a new life. When that bird leaves the nest it is free to fly and survey the world.
Purpose beyond self-made usefulness
God seems to constantly remind us that we need to discover His purpose if we are going to have true satisfaction in life… “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) If I am truthful with myself, I need to realize that God simply wants me to use me as His workmanship and not my desire to, individually, be beneficial to the world. I need to be beneficial to HIM.
