# Take Christ With You to Work: Dean Rush's Welcome to Faith Breakthroughs

In a short welcome video, Dean Rush, executive director of Faith Breakthroughs, explains why the ministry exists. The purpose, he says, is "to provide some tools for you to get Christ into the workplace." The video's description says the same thing another way: tools for instilling biblical principles into the office, factory, or forum.

## What Dean saw from the executive's chair

Dean spent most of his working life as an executive at various aviation companies. Over those years he saw a lot of people who were insecure: unsure how to operate, worried about their families, struggling with day-to-day life. "The main reason," he says, "is that they don't know Christ... it's up to you and I to provide an example."

## The arithmetic of the workweek

Dean puts numbers on it. He cites a 2004 magazine survey that found fewer than 40 percent of American families attended church at least twice a month. A church service runs about an hour and a half. But people work about 47 hours a week, and they encounter about 150 people at work, most of whom don't know Christ.

Set those side by side and the point makes itself. For many people, the workplace may be the main place they ever see faith lived out.

## Example, not hammering

That doesn't mean storming the break room. "It doesn't mean we have to go in and hammer them," Dean says, "it means we have to go in and set an example." He means honesty in how we do the job. He means understanding when a co-worker's marriage is coming apart.

## Sent out, then and now

Dean turns to the Gospels. He points to Jesus sending out the Twelve to teach and to heal. (Dean cites Mark 9 in the video; the sending of the Twelve is told in Mark 6 and Luke 9.) In the workplace, he says, teaching and healing means healing marriages, healing hurts, and building understanding, and we do it by showing the traits of Christ in how we live.

Then Jesus sends out the 72, and Dean hears the same charge for us: "go and do likewise." "Here we are 2000 years later," he says, "and you and I need to go and do likewise... When you go to work this week take Christ with you."

## A mission, not a business

Dean is plain about motives. "We're not here to make money," he says. "You have a mission and I have a mission and that's to tell others about Christ." On the Faith Breakthroughs website, he adds, friends share what they've done in their own businesses, so others can learn from real examples.

## What this asks of you

Dean's welcome is short, and so is the assignment. Most of us spend far more hours at work than in church. The people beside us at work are the people we are sent to. Be honest. Be understanding when someone's life is coming apart. Let the way you treat people show who Christ is. And this week, take Christ with you to work.
