# "It's Not Integrated, It's Who I Am": Gil Harris and Katy Auto Care

How do you share Christ through a business without preaching at your customers? In a video interview with Dean Rush that premiered in June 2020, Gil Harris, owner of Katy Auto Care in Katy, Texas, answers by setting the question aside. For Gil, faith isn't something he adds to the shop. It's who he is.

## From Mobile to Katy

Gil, 61 at the time, moved from Mobile, Alabama, to Katy, Texas, in 1997 and started Katy Auto Care from scratch. When he spoke with Dean, the shop was 23 years old.

He came to Christ at 10, in 1968. He had asked his parents what it meant to invite Jesus into your heart, and they told him Jesus would speak to his heart one day. Then one day Gil called his mom into his bedroom and told her he thought Jesus was speaking to him. They called the preacher.

## A business owned by a Christian

Gil chooses his words with care. "I have a business that is owned by a Christian," he says, and that is what gives the shop its atmosphere and its influence.

Then comes the line that gives this piece its title: "I have never thought about how I can integrate Christ in Katy Auto Care. Christ is my life... it's not integrated, it's me, it's what I do, it's who I am."

## Hearing people's stories

Gil loves talking with customers about faith, and even about politics. He listens first. "I'm not here to judge or debate, I'm here to hear your story," he says. "My story is always about Jesus."

Not everyone wants that conversation, and Gil respects that. To a customer who isn't interested, he answers "with a smile... I respect that, but if you ever need anyone to talk to you know where I'm at." To a customer of another faith: "we may disagree... but I want you to know I care about you and love you and I sure appreciate your business."

The video's description gathers this up in a few phrases: a successful business is a great example to society; it can positively influence a community through service; it teaches by example without preaching; it accepts people; and it leaves room to share personal belief. Gil's shop is all of that in practice.

## Honest about brokenness

Gil doesn't present himself as someone who has it all together. He has been open about struggling with addictions and brokenness as a believer. When he spoke with Dean, he was going on eight years of recovery, healing, and restoration.

That honesty matters. A customer who is struggling can see that following Christ isn't a claim to be flawless. It's a life that is being restored.

## Seek first

Gil's scripture is Matthew 6:33: "seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness... and all these things will be added to you." It fits the way he talks about everything else. Put the kingdom first, and let the rest follow.

## For the owner behind the counter

You don't need a program to bring faith into your business. Gil's example is simpler, and harder: be the same person at the counter that you are everywhere else. Listen before you talk. Respect the customer who says no thanks. Tell the one who disagrees that you care about them and appreciate their business. And when your story comes up, let it be about Jesus.
