# Gil Harris of Katy Auto Care on Sharing Christ Through Your Business

Dean Rush talks with Gil Harris, who started Katy Auto Care in Katy, Texas, from scratch, about running a business owned by a Christian, listening to customers, and recovery. (Premiered on YouTube June 27, 2020.)

## Key lessons

- A successful business is a great example to society, and it can positively influence a community through service.
- "I have a business that is owned by a Christian." "Christ is my life... it's not integrated, it's me, it's what I do, it's who I am."
- Listen first: "I'm not here to judge or debate, I'm here to hear your story... my story is always about Jesus."
- Accept people. To those not interested: "I respect that, but if you ever need anyone to talk to you know where I'm at."
- Be honest about brokenness. Gil speaks openly about addiction and going on eight years of recovery, healing, and restoration.
- Matthew 6:33: "seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness... and all these things will be added to you."

## Transcript

_A verbatim transcript is not on file in the barn yet. These are condensed transcript notes from the source material Daniel Comp provided, in the video's order. Lines in quotation marks are quoted as they appear in the transcript; everything else is a close summary. Randy wrote these notes from the transcript and summary and did not watch the video._

Dean Rush interviews Gil Harris, 61. Gil moved from Mobile, Alabama, to Katy, Texas, in 1997 and started Katy Auto Care from scratch 23 years ago.

He came to Christ at 10, in 1968. He had asked his parents what inviting Jesus into your heart meant, and they said Jesus would speak to his heart one day. He called his mom into his bedroom and said he thought Jesus was speaking to him, and they called the preacher.

"I have a business that is owned by a Christian," which gives it the atmosphere and the influence. "I have never thought about how I can integrate Christ in Katy Auto Care. Christ is my life... it's not integrated, it's me, it's what I do, it's who I am."

Gil loves conversations with customers about faith, and even politics: "I'm not here to judge or debate, I'm here to hear your story... my story is always about Jesus." To those who aren't interested: "with a smile... I respect that, but if you ever need anyone to talk to you know where I'm at." To those of other faiths: "we may disagree... but I want you to know I care about you and love you and I sure appreciate your business."

Gil has been open about struggling with addictions and brokenness as a believer, and he has been on "going on eight years" of recovery, healing, and restoration.

His scripture is Matthew 6:33: "seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness... and all these things will be added to you."
