# Steve Collier on Sharing Christ in the Workplace

Steve Collier, an architect and businessman in Austin, Texas, talks about coming to Christ and about sharing his faith at work without pressure: with employees, with clients, and through the work itself. (Faith Breakthroughs on YouTube, August 2019.)

## Key lessons

- **0:21** Steve came to UT Austin, played football for Coach Royal, went to architecture school, and went out on his own. Married, three daughters, seven grandkids.
- **0:54** His family stopped going to church when he was about 8. At 14, at a revival, he saw "I had a sin problem and that he died for me... but not only that he had a purpose for me afterwards."
- **3:47** Sharing Christ "has more to do with loving on people... being ready but not being forceful." Fish, plant seeds, and pray for people later.
- **7:00** Be unrelenting in love for God and in ethics, with no compromise. His employees pray before lunch at office meetings.
- **8:41** "I have a business that has many Christians in it." The work is part of "God's work of common grace."
- **10:39** As the boss, be careful: "I'd rather the Holy Spirit convict them... instead of them feeling pressure from me."
- **12:31** 1 Corinthians 10:31: "whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." Business is part of stewardship, and we stay ready to share our hope.

## Transcript

_A verbatim transcript is not on file in the barn yet. These are condensed transcript notes from the source material Daniel Comp provided, in the video's order, with the chapter times from the transcript. Lines in quotation marks are quoted as they appear in the transcript; everything else is a close summary. Randy wrote these notes from the transcript and summary and did not watch the video._

### 0:21 Intro

Steve came to the University of Texas at Austin and played football for Coach Royal. He went to architecture school and later went out on his own. He married and has three daughters and seven grandkids.

### 0:54 How did you come to Christ

Steve's father was an artist, trained back to World War II, and a lay pastor at a very conservative church in Dallas. He preached that people from other churches could be Christians too, and the elders asked him to leave. The family stopped going to church when Steve was about 8.

As a high school freshman in Forney, Texas, Steve's girlfriend invited him to a revival. "God had me primed for the gospel." He had everything he wanted, yet he felt an internal shame. "I had a sin problem and that he died for me... but not only that he had a purpose for me afterwards." At 14 it was "life-changing."

### 3:47 Sharing Christ at work

In college Steve tried cold-turkey evangelism at a bus stop. The young man jumped on the next bus to avoid them, and it tainted Steve's view. "It has more to do with loving on people... being ready but not being forceful."

He doesn't lead with his faith. He has heard, "if somebody leads with I'm a businessman, I'm a Christian, hold on to your wallet." With new clients he prefers to "fish" and "plant seeds": mentioning a friend at church, or a verse when ethics come up, and then praying for them later.

### 7:00 Being bold

Steve is unrelenting in his love for God and in his ethics, with no compromise. He wonders whether an introvert can be an evangelical, since evangelism can feel like sales. His employees know he's a believer. They pray before lunch at office meetings, and he has prayed with many of them on the side.

### 8:41 Opening letter

"I have a business that has many Christians in it," not a Christian business. His new-hire letter for CDCC (Collier Damron Construction Consulting) says: "I see our work as a higher calling... assessing and minimizing risks inherent with design and construction provides real estate lenders with the assurance they need to make loans... lubricating the economic engine... provides work and feeds families... we are part of God's work of common grace of providing for people and sustaining our world."

### 10:39 Be careful

As the boss, Steve is guarded, given the financial pressure his employees are under: "I'd rather the Holy Spirit convict them... instead of them feeling pressure from me." His tools are conversations about scripture, business ethics, and prayer.

When a client pressed him on why he wouldn't do something unethical, he said: "because I believe there's a God in heaven and I believe he's watching what I do and I don't think he'd be pleased with that."

### 12:31 Glorifying God

1 Corinthians 10:31: "whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." To glorify means "to make great, give weight to, give focus on." In Genesis 1 we're told to "subdue and rule": be a good steward, a servant who takes care of people's spiritual and physical needs. "Part of that is business... feeding and making and building things. It's not all just evangelism." But there's another world and a different hope, so we must be ready.
