# Hard Talk as Manager — Listen, Demonstrate, Speak True

> **how to have a hard conversation with an employee as a christian manager**

**Provenance / Join map:** `WQ-021` (LEAD · Manager · A,B) → Domain 1: Mugshots 3 life lessons (listen to Pete Dyehouse; empower) + Teaching with Your Walk (demonstrate the maneuver) + Deuteronomy 31:6 courage instrument → Domain 2: Proverbs / Galatians / Ephesians triangulation (WEB bridge; CSB preferred for final public quotes).

## Context for the Reader

Hard conversations feel like a stall warning: fear of conflict, fear of being “un-Christian,” fear of HR blowback. Dean writes as a pilot-manager who learned he could not answer every hangar question from a Dallas chair, who watched a demanding customer fill hangars once someone finally *listened*, and who taught jet students by demonstrating the maneuver — not by talking until breathless. The Asker steadies the Christian manager, then walks listen → clear truth → lived example under Scripture — without Walls jargon or celebrity-pastor pose.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only), from a pilot’s perspective. Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Common scotoma**, **Applicable memorable solution**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, **First-time learner**, and **How the web Asker should answer** are enrichment for Asker / llms-full digestion — not Dean speaking.

---

## Common scotoma (blind spot)

The blind spot is **avoiding the conversation in the name of kindness** — or **dominating it in the name of authority** — so neither listening nor truth lands. A related scotoma: treating “Christian manager” as code for never naming performance reality, which is neither love nor leadership.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s listen / empower / demonstrate counsel mounts on gentle restoration, slow speech, and truth in love.

| Claim / need | Scriptural undercarriage (WEB or clear paraphrase) |
| --- | --- |
| Listen before you answer | “He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.” (Proverbs 18:13 WEB) |
| Restore with gentleness | “Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness.” (Galatians 6:1 WEB) |
| Speak truth in love | “but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him…” (Ephesians 4:15 WEB) |
| Courage when fear spikes | “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid… for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 WEB) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Listen — Pete Dyehouse and full hangars

I asked Pete a very simple question and I said, “Pete, you threatened to leave here and we want your business. What do you think it would take to have you remain as a customer of our organization?” He looked around the room and he didn’t pick out any person individually. He said, “Honestly what I want you to do if you would just simply listen.” He said, “I sometimes become very arrogant and yelling and belligerent because I want you to listen.” He said, “I love the facility here. When you do the work you clean my airplane well.” He said, “If I were gonna leave I would have already left but please, please just listen and if you’ll do that I guarantee you I will stay and I will get other people to come and do the same thing.”

You know within three months we had all the hangars full and my people were listening and I was listening and it was a great lesson to be learned.

### Empower — you cannot know every hangar floor

…someone would come in the office and say, “Mr. Rush, I need to know how to paint the hangar floors in Ames, Iowa.” I’d never been to Ames… I began to understand that I could not do all of the work… I need to empower them… I found out quickly by empowering I was empowering myself too.

### Demonstrate the maneuver — walk before lecture

When I was instructing student pilots to fly jets in the Air Force, I found they needed to see me demonstrate a maneuver before they could understand the actions necessary to perform it. I could talk about it until I was out of breath, but they were never able to complete the process correctly until they saw the actions necessary to complete it successfully. You are exactly like that in the workplace. Your example is more important than just talking.

### Courage instrument when afraid

…that verse has helped me handle a number of challenging times in life… It is a simple verse found in Deuteronomy 31:6. It says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

> **Scholar sidebar — Hard talk is not harsh talk**
> Proverbs 18:13 underwrites listen-first. Galatians 6:1 underwrites gentleness in correction. Ephesians 4:15 underwrites truth without cruelty. Deuteronomy 31:6 underwrites courage when the calendar holds a hard meeting. Dean’s carbon is listen / empower / demonstrate — not a scripted HR monologue. Enrichment is not Dean speaking.

---

## Applicable memorable solution

1. **Pray Deuteronomy 31:6 once** before you schedule the meeting — courage is presence-based, not personality-based.
2. **Open with one listen question** — “Help me understand what is going on from your seat” — before your diagnosis monologue.
3. **Name one clear truth** in love (behavior, impact, needed change) — not a character assassination.
4. **Demonstrate one inch** you already model (punctuality, respect, follow-through) so the talk is not empty lecture.
5. **Agree one next action and one follow-up date** — empowerment with accountability, not fog.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Avoidance is not kindness** — hard conversations are part of Christian management.
2. **Listen first** — Pete Dyehouse only needed to be heard; hangars filled afterward.
3. **You are not omniscient** — empower rather than fake every answer.
4. **Demonstrate the maneuver** — walk funds talk.
5. **Courage has an instrument** — God goes with you into the room.
*Related WQs:* WQ-005 (team in conflict), WQ-013 (keep team calm in layoffs), WQ-017 (toxic boss).

## First-time learner

**One sentence:** As a Christian manager, have the hard conversation by listening first, speaking one clear truth in love, and demonstrating the standard with your own walk under God’s courage.
**Why:** Kindness without truth and truth without gentleness both fail; Proverbs and Galatians hold both.
**Key verses:** Proverbs 18:13; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 4:15; Deuteronomy 31:6.
**Practice:** Schedule the talk; pray Deut 31:6; one listen question; one clear ask; one follow-up date.

---

## How the web Asker should answer

1. **Name the problem** — hard employee conversation under Christian conscience.
2. **Steady the person** — fear of the talk is normal; courage is God-with-you, not bravado.
3. **Dean parallel (pilot perspective)** — listen (Pete); empower; demonstrate maneuver; Deut 31:6.
4. **Scripture undercarriage** — Proverbs 18:13, Galatians 6:1, Ephesians 4:15, Deuteronomy 31:6 (WEB bridge / CSB gate).
5. **One practice step** — listen question + one clear truth + follow-up date this week.
6. **Boundary** — no HR legal script as if licensed; point complex cases to qualified counsel.
7. **Invite the next honest question** at https://faithbreakthroughs.org/ — repeat offense, termination fear, or team conflict.
