# Too Much Work, Missing Family — Reorder the Scorecard

> **working too much missing my family christian guilt**

**Provenance / Join map:** `WQ-040` (BURN · IC · A,B) → Domain 1: Work Life Balance + First Things First + Teaching with Your Walk → Domain 2: Proverbs / Ecclesiastes / Timothy / Matthew (WEB bridge; CSB preferred).

## Model ingestion brief

Use this unit when a seeker works too much, misses family, and feels Christian guilt. Keep **Dean’s excerpt** as carbon. Hold **both** poles: 1 Timothy 5:8 provision and Proverbs 23:4–5 restraint from wealth-toil. Do **not** counsel reckless job abandonment with no plan; do **not** baptize overwork as love. Guilt can be a mercy light toward scorecard repentance and presence. No Walls. Enrichment ≠ Dean speaking.

## Context for the Reader

The guilt is real: long hours, empty chair at dinner, and a Christian conscience that will not stay quiet. Dean’s early career said the hours were “for the family” while the scorecard was the bank balance. Family desire for his presence exposed the wrong direction.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only), from a pilot’s perspective. Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Common scotoma**, **Multi-facet insight**, **Applicable memorable solution**, **What NOT to say**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, **First-time learner**, and **How the web Asker should answer** are enrichment — not Dean speaking.

---

## Common scotoma (blind spot)

**Named blind spot:** Treating guilt as either **proof you must quit tomorrow with no landing strip** or **noise to ignore because “I’m providing.”**

**Why it feels true:** Bills are real; culture rewards hustle; churches sometimes praise provider-absence as sacrifice.

**What it costs:** Hollow homes; baptized overwork; kids who stop asking; witness that collapses because home and work diverge; money that sprouts wings.

**How Dean’s scar breaks it:** Family wanted presence; “Christian example” of work-priority took God out; faith and family named as lasting investments; Ecclesiastes seasons restore multi-gear life.

**Related scotoma:** Calling endless hours “for the family” while never being with the family.

---

## Multi-facet insight

1. **Scorecard facet** — Bank balance as love-proof fails. Proverbs 23:4–5. Faith and family investments outlast toys and markets.

2. **Provision facet** — 1 Timothy 5:8 honors household provision. Sequential plans beat shame-quit. Work remains good without becoming god.

3. **Presence / witness facet** — Home example funds workplace walk. First things first. Seasons under heaven include God-time and family-time, not only office gear.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

| Claim / need | Scriptural undercarriage (WEB or clear paraphrase) |
| --- | --- |
| Do not toil to acquire fleeting wealth | “Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.” (Proverbs 23:4–5 WEB) |
| Seasons under heaven — not only office gear | “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 WEB) |
| Provide for your household | “But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith…” (1 Timothy 5:8 WEB) |
| Seek first the kingdom | “But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 WEB) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Bank-balance scorecard and the wrong direction

If you would have asked me in my early years of my career why I was spending so much time in the workplace the answer would have been simple. I would have told you I was spending that time to have a good income for my family. The time at the office was justifiable by looking at the wealth it would bring to my family. The scorecard was the bank account balance.

Was that a valid ideology? At the time it was a simple, yes, that is what we are supposed to do. It was when I discovered my family wanted me to see the importance of spending time with them that I realized I was headed in the wrong direction. I was also trying to set a “Christian” example for our employees. When I demanded they make work the priority I was, in fact, taking God out of the equation and showing my search for monetary reward over family. I didn’t pay attention to the instructions in the bible about money: “Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven” (Proverbs 23: 4-5)…

For many years I have been told that there are only two investments that always pay dividends that are worth spending. The investments that count are **faith and family**. As I matured, I realized the validity that statement. It is the balance between family, faith, and work that is important.

### First things first — seasons and home foundation

*Ecclesiastes 3:1 says it best, "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven"…* There is a time for work, for recreation, and for honoring our family. Most importantly, there is a time to spend quality time with God so that we may not lose sight of the balance that we so desperately need… All of those toys that we attempt to find or buy, rust, and fade away… the only thing I have found that always pays great reward are investments in time with God and the family.

There is nothing more valuable than family so if we want to show our employees how to renew their mind we must start by demonstrating investment in our homes. It is essential to provide an example to our peers before we can reach them with words… Start your ministry in the workplace at home.

### Walk funds talk

We often believe our jobs are separated from our home… work is very much tied to your family. The foundation for being able to reach others for Christ in the workplace is tied to your example to your family… Your example at home is reflected by every action at work.

> **Scholar sidebar — Guilt that reorders, not guilt that abandons**
> Hold 1 Timothy 5:8 and Proverbs 23 together. Enrichment is not Dean speaking.

## Applicable memorable solution

1. **Name the scorecard aloud once.**
2. **Protect one presence block this week.**
3. **Read Proverbs 23:4–5 before after-hours email** daily this week.
4. **Keep provision honest** — sequential change if structure must shift.
5. **Pray Ecclesiastes 3:1 / Matthew 6:33** over one calendar cut.

---

## What NOT to say

1. **Do not counsel reckless quit with no plan** under guilt pressure.
2. **Do not baptize overwork as Christian love or example.**
3. **Do not invent Walls** or non-Domain-1 biography.
4. **Do not shame honest providers** as if presence alone pays rent.
5. **Do not ventriloquize enrichment as Dean.**
6. **Do not promise money will not matter** if they only “have more faith.”

5. **One practice** — one presence block + Proverbs 23 before late email.
6. **Hold both poles** — provision and presence.
7. **Invite next question** at https://faithbreakthroughs.org/.
