# Falling Behind — Fog, Limits, Maintain Control

> **chemo brain at work I’m falling behind**

**Provenance / Join map:** `WQ-049` (HEALTH · IC · A,B,C) → Domain 1: compound capacity diversion + free-fall honesty + maintain-control triad + cancer-couch low + higher-power stall recovery → Domain 2: Psalms / Gospels / Pauline triangulation (WEB bridge; CSB preferred for final public quotes). **Boundary:** not medical advice; no invented medical claims; accommodation path outside Asker authority.

## Context for the Reader

Focus slips. Names vanish. Tasks that used to be automatic now pile up — and shame says weak faith or lazy character. Dean writes as a pilot who lived illness diverting capacity from work, free-fall that *appeared* totally out of control, and an afternoon too sick and depressed to produce — not as a neurologist. The Asker refuses medical claims about “chemo brain,” steadies dignity, runs maintain-control toward honest limits, and points clinical and accommodation questions to clinicians and qualified workplace process.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only), from a pilot’s perspective. Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Common scotoma**, **Applicable memorable solution**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, **First-time learner**, and **How the web Asker should answer** are enrichment for Asker / llms-full digestion — not Dean speaking.

---

## Common scotoma (blind spot)

The blind spot is **equating cognitive fog with moral failure** — then either hiding until collapse or overworking to “prove” you still belong. A related scotoma: treating the Asker as the accommodation office or the clinic.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s capacity and free-fall scars mount on weakness without shame, patience under load, and higher power when airspeed drops — without medical claims.

| Claim / need | Scriptural undercarriage (WEB or clear paraphrase) |
| --- | --- |
| Strength meets weakness without shame | “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 WEB) |
| Hard pressed is not crushed | “We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair.” (2 Corinthians 4:8 WEB) |
| God meets the faint with power | “He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.” (Isaiah 40:29 WEB) |
| Cast the anxiety; God cares | “Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 WEB) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Compound crisis — capacity diverted from work

All that was happening between the cancer and our business was about to become even more complicated. We had endured some of the toughest periods of our married life as the cancer attacked, surgery followed surgery, and life seemed to be accelerating in the wrong direction. Stress was an afterthought as the illness caused diversion from our ability to care for the business, which caused a constantly deteriorating income stream. There seemed to be no relief, but life kept going.

### Free-fall appears out of control

If the young eagle leaves prematurely, there is a moment when the bird falls free of the nest and it appears totally out of control while it tumbles through the air falling toward the earth.

### Maintain control triad (Air Force → life)

As a pilot, I learned early in my Air Force career that there are some simple actions that are to be taken in case of an emergency, and they work. They work in the air and in life.

Our Air Force instructors taught us over and over again that we were to:

1. Maintain control of the airplane
2. Analyze the situation / take proper action
3. Land as soon as practical

Those simple actions are also good for overcoming problems in life. I have discovered that applying them to a crisis is a good start toward recovery.

### Afternoon on the couch — too sick to produce

During recovery from my first cancer surgery, I was too sick to work and too depressed to be productive. One afternoon while Vickie was at work and the kids were at school I sat on our couch and contemplated what I should do with my life. I was feeling sorry for myself and questioned if I should give up or continue to fight this deadly disease.

It sounds like a pretty basic question, but the answer at that point in my treatment was a matter of life and death. It was a very difficult afternoon; I was bombarded by doubts about my self-worth.

### Stall recovery — higher power when airspeed drops

I have found life very similar to the airplane necessity of maintaining sufficient airspeed so that my life is controllable. If I slow down too much, I find my self unreliable in doing what God wants me to do… If, however, I look to Him for more ability His higher power somehow moves me forward… We can stall when we are disappointed in a job, a relationship, the loss of a loved one, or simply through fatigue. In all cases I have found that if go to God for more power, His higher power gets me through the stall and back to life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Fog is not fake faith**
> 2 Corinthians 12:9 and Isaiah 40:29 underwrite weakness and power without inventing medical claims. Dean names capacity diversion and unproductive lows as lived scars — not as a clinical definition of “chemo brain.” Accommodation and medical evaluation sit outside Asker authority; enrichment is not Dean speaking.

---

## Applicable memorable solution

1. **Name the boundary aloud** — faith/work counsel here; clinicians and HR/accommodation process there.
2. **Run the triad today** — Maintain control (no shame-all-nighter); analyze one task you can still finish cleanly; land one honest next step (clinician check-in path, one prioritized list, or one need-to-know sentence to a safe supervisor — without inventing medical labels).
3. **Write three capacity truths** without moral spin (energy, focus windows, error risk).
4. **Pray Isaiah 40:29** before the hardest work block — higher power, not self-hype.
5. **Refuse two lies** — “falling behind means I am worthless” and “I must hide until I am the old me.”

---

## Takeaways

1. **Illness diverts work capacity** — Dean lived it; life kept going anyway.
2. **Free-fall can *appear* out of control** — appearance is not the whole ending.
3. **Maintain control first** — triad before panic resignation or fake full speed.
4. **Unproductive lows are named without shame** — couch season was real.
5. **Clinicians and workplace process own medical/accommodation lanes** — Asker does not.
*Related WQs:* WQ-046 (diagnosis while working), WQ-007 (return after cancer), WQ-047 (leave and faith).

---

## First-time learner

**One sentence:** If treatment fog has you falling behind at work, maintain control, name honest limits without shame, seek clinical and workplace-process help in their lanes, and ask God for higher power one block at a time.
**Why:** Moralizing fog and hiding both distort; Scripture holds weakness and strength together.
**Key verses:** 2 Corinthians 12:9; 2 Corinthians 4:8; Isaiah 40:29; 1 Peter 5:7.
**Practice:** Three capacity truths; one triad run; one Isaiah 40:29 prayer; one clinician or process next step outside the Asker.

---

## How the web Asker should answer

1. **Name the problem** — cognitive/work lag after illness colliding with badge pressure and shame.
2. **Steady the person** — falling behind is not automatic proof of weak faith.
3. **Dean parallel (pilot perspective)** — capacity diversion; free-fall appearance; triad; couch low; higher power.
4. **Scripture undercarriage** — 2 Corinthians 12:9, 2 Corinthians 4:8, Isaiah 40:29, 1 Peter 5:7 (WEB bridge / CSB gate).
5. **One practice step** — triad + three capacity truths + higher-power prayer.
6. **Boundary** — no medical claims; no accommodation advice as if licensed; point to clinicians and HR/process.
7. **Invite the next honest question** at https://faithbreakthroughs.org/ — disclosure, leave, or manager support.
