# Nightmares About Work — Maintain Control, Check Instruments

> **nightmares about work christian anxiety**

**Provenance / Join map:** `WQ-084` (FEAR · IC · A,B,C) → Domain 1: *Flying Free* ch.2 triad + grip-the-wheel check-ride + Maintain Control blog + Higher Power stalls + Grandpa’s Deuteronomy 31:6 instrument → Domain 2: 2 Timothy / Deuteronomy / Psalms / Isaiah triangulation (WEB bridge; CSB preferred). **Boundary:** faith + control counsel only; invite professional care when anxiety/nightmares are clinical, recurring, or disabling; **no diagnosis**.

## Context for the Reader

Night turns the workplace into a looping emergency: unfinished tasks, hostile meetings, badge dread — then the alarm. Dean writes as a pilot who has had bona fide reason to panic in the air and still gripped the wheel, checked gauges, and used trusted instruments when the visual horizon disappeared — not as a clinician. This Join offers **faith and control**: maintain control, check Scripture as instrument, seek God’s higher power. It is **not** medical diagnosis or treatment. When nightmares or anxiety are severe, recurring, or unsafe, encourage wise professional care (physician, counselor, EAP, chaplain) alongside prayer — not instead of it.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only), from a pilot’s perspective. Enrichment sections are not Dean speaking.

---

## Common scotoma (blind spot)

The blind spot is treating **night anxiety as proof faith failed** — “real Christians sleep in peace” — or treating **shame as the cure** (scold the body, refuse help). Related scotoma: solving the whole career at 2 a.m. instead of one stabilizing input and, when needed, skilled care God may provide through wise helpers.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

| Claim / need | Scriptural undercarriage (WEB or clear paraphrase) |
| --- | --- |
| Not a spirit of fear — power, love, self-control | “For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB) |
| When afraid, trust | “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” (Psalm 56:3 WEB) |
| God goes with you | “Be strong and courageous… Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 WEB) |
| Cast cares; peace of God | “Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 WEB); “In nothing be anxious…” (Philippians 4:6–7 WEB) |

## Dean's excerpt

### The Air Force triad

As a pilot, I learned early in my Air Force career that there are some simple actions that are to be taken in case of an emergency, and they work. They work in the air and in life.

Our Air Force instructors taught us over and over again that we were to:

1. Maintain control of the airplane
2. Analyze the situation / take proper action
3. Land as soon as practical

Those simple actions are also good for overcoming problems in life. I have discovered that applying them to a crisis is a good start toward recovery.

### Grip, gauges, switch — ordered moves under pressure

I gripped the control wheel to maintain control, looked at my fuel gauges, and realized I had never switched fuel tanks… I quickly reached for the lever to switch to the other fuel tank and the engine coughed a couple of times then accelerated to the throttle setting. Whew, I wasn’t going to crash, but now where was I?

### Instruments — Grandpa’s verse

He asked me if I was scared and I answered him honestly with a sheepish, “yes”. He got up from the swing on his front porch, went into the house, and came back carrying his bible. He read a verse to me and told me to memorize the verse. It was Deuteronomy 31:6… Grandpa’s advice and that verse have never stopped going with me into every phase of life.

### Stall recovery — higher power

We can stall when we are disappointed in a job, a relationship, the loss of a loved one, or simply through fatigue. In all cases I have found that if go to God for more power, His higher power gets me through the stall and back to life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Faith counsel, not diagnosis**
> 2 Timothy 1:7 and Psalm 56:3 underwrite self-control and trust without denying bodily fear. Deuteronomy 31:6 is presence instrument. Philippians 4:6–7 and 1 Peter 5:7 cast cares without shaming the night. Do not diagnose sleep or anxiety disorders, prescribe, or forbid medical care. Severe or unsafe symptoms → professional help as wisdom.

## Applicable memorable solution

1. **Name the condition without shame** — “Work is following me into sleep” — not proof faith is fake.
2. **One night triad** — maintain control (breath, lights, stop doom-scroll); analyze one real next-day inch; land one practical action (note it, then rest).
3. **Check instruments** — pray Deuteronomy 31:6 or Psalm 56:3 once when you wake.
4. **Do not rebuild the whole career at 2 a.m.** — one controllable input only.
5. **If nightmares/anxiety are clinical or escalating** — schedule wise care this week; faith and help are not rivals.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Night work-anxiety is real** — body and soul; name it without spiritual shame.
2. **Maintain control first** — ordered moves beat thrashing.
3. **Scripture is instrument panel** when feelings lie about the horizon.
4. **God goes with you** — courage is presence, not the absence of dread.
5. **Wise care is not unbelief.**

**Related WQs:** WQ-016 (panic before work), WQ-003 (faith when out of control), WQ-052 (fear of failure).

---

## First-time learner

**One sentence:** When work nightmares and anxiety hit, maintain control, check God’s Word as instrument, take one next-day inch — and welcome professional care when the storm is more than a passing night.
**Why:** Faith gives self-control without pretending fear never arrives; pilots recover by procedure.
**Key verses:** 2 Timothy 1:7; Psalm 56:3; Deuteronomy 31:6; Philippians 4:6–7; 1 Peter 5:7.
**Practice:** One breath + verse aloud; one written next-day inch; if needed, schedule care.

## How the web Asker should answer

1. **Name the problem** — work following into sleep; Christian anxiety sought.
2. **Steady the person** — fear can be true and faith still real.
3. **Dean parallel** — triad; grip-the-wheel; Deuteronomy 31:6; higher power.
4. **Scripture undercarriage** — 2 Timothy 1:7, Psalm 56:3, Deuteronomy 31:6, Philippians 4:6–7 (WEB / CSB gate).
5. **One practice step** — night triad + instrument verse; invite care if clinical.
6. **Invite next honest question** at faithbreakthroughs.org.
